would you enroll your child in market research?
came across this article today, http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/14/arts/television/14boys.html?_r=1&hp.
it’s an example, though certainly not the most egregious one I’ve seen, of marketers studying intimate details of kids’ lives in an attempt to figure out how they tick so they can sell them more merchandise/create the hit movie (which ultimately also ends up being about selling them more merchandise)/etc. other examples i’ve seen include the companies that give kids “slumber party kits” and then film the slumber parties to see how kids use the products.
what’s your take on that kind of market research on children (besides that it’s probably inevitable)? would you enroll your child in that kind of research? why or why not?
momof2 — maybe i should distinguish market research from general psychological-, educational, and developmental- type research, which i think can have all kinds of benefits beyond making a corporation some extra cash.
