Can I print pictures from a video recording?
While on holiday I recorded video on a hard disk camcorder. Is there any way I can freeze a frame and print it off as a photograph? Do I need any particular software to do this?
Can you do it? Yes. All video editors can provide you a frame grab. Or if you pause the player at the frame you want, then you can do a screen print.
On a Mac, Command-Shift-3 will put the image file on your desktop. On Windows, ALT-PRT SCR will put the image in the clipboard – then you can paste it into whatever application you want than can deal with images.
Warning: The still image quality will not be very good (especially if there is movement or the video is very highly compressed and you want the print to be large). The methods used by a camcorder and still camera are very different. And their specialized hardware and firmware behave differently for optimizing still vs moving images.
