Why is the song “These Are a Few Of My Favorite Things” often played as a Christmas song or holiday song ?
This song, from the musical “The Sound Of Music” is often played as a Christmas or holiday song, yet it doesn’t make many reference to Christmas, i.e. “Silent Night”, or the winter holiday season, i.e. “Jingle Bells. There are a few references to winter: warm wollen mittens, sleigh bells, snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyeleashes, and silver white winters that melt into spring, as well as one reference to gift giving: brown paper packages tied up with strings, but there are more references in the song to non-Christmas or non-winter holiday “favorite things”. I do not recall this song being sung in the movie as part of a Christmnas scene. Why is the song “These Are a Few Of My Favorite Things” often played as a Christmas song or holiday song ?
The song mentions snowflakes in the line, ‘Snowflakes that fall on my nose and eyelashes’ so I think it just refers to the season.
Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things
Cream colored ponies and crisp apple strudels
Doorbells and sleighbells and schnitzel with noodles
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
These are a few of my favorite things
Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
Snow flakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
Silver white winters that melt into springs
These are a few of my favorite things
When the dog bites, when the bee stings, when i’m feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
Like sliver white winters that melt into springs
And then i don’t feel so bad
