Help. I have booked USA holiday and need car hire – havent got and cant get credit card – is there a way?
If you have a debit card with the MasterCard or Visa logos, most companies will let you use that to book a rental, but will ask for a second piece of ID (most often, a return airline ticket). Here’s the policy at Avis:

Note: They won’t accept a prepaid debit card–it has to be the kind of debit card that’s linked to a bank account.
A few companies will accept cash, but you’ll need to leave a few hundred $ as deposit, plus show several forms of ID and a return ticket. Here’s Alamo’s policy:

Definitely make your reservation in advance. And ask customer service about the policy before your trip–you don’t want any surprises when you arrive!
Also, it’s probably best to make your reservation at an airport location–they’re likely to be more experienced with these unusual cases, and won’t freak out . . .
